Choose a College Major or Training Program
Choosing a college major or a training program is a major
step. To make the best decision possible, be sure to read
and follow the steps recommended in the section, Learn
how to make high-quality decisions.
There are four steps: consider all your alternatives;
think about the pros and cons of each; seek out information
about them; and make careful plans.
The activities listed below will help you follow these
steps:
- Get the information about training requirements for different jobs from this section of CanLearn and JobFutures. When viewing information in JobFutures about a specific job, you can see education requirements by clicking on the "Education, Training, and Experience" tab.
- Talk to people in the fields that interest you. Discuss
your questions and concerns with them. Ask them what
training programs or college majors prepare people for
their work. Ask them for the names of other people with
whom you can talk.
- Ask for help at the library or a college career center.
They have reference books and other ways to help you.
For example, Career Services at the University of North
Carolina - Wilmington has an excellent website. We recommend
the section "What
Can I Do with a Major in . . . ?"
- Review a list of sample majors and training programs
related to the six personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising,
and Conventional.
If you do not know which types you most like, take the Career
Key to find out.
