Career Counselling FAQ

Going to a professional career counsellors can be quite helpful. We recommend it highly.

Unfortunately, however, anyone can call themselves a "counsellor" or "career counsellor". You want to get one who is professionally trained.

If you are a student, you will likely have access to a trained counsellor. There are also government and private sources of career counselling. The Canada Career Consortium's "The Work Handbook" gives you valuable tips on seeking career counselling.

The National Career Development Association's website, even though it is written for an American audience, is also an excellent source. Under the heading and drop down menu "Career Center" select "Need a Career Counselor?" and "Consumer Guidelines for Selecting a Counselor". You will find many topics of interest, such as:

  • Consumer Guidelines for Selecting a Counsellor
  • Search for a Counsellor by State
  • Career Counsellor Training and Credentials
  • What do Career Counsellors Do?
  • Career Counselling Fees?
